Speed Up Package Downloads using "apt-fast" in Ubuntu

All these days, we all were using "apt-get" to install any packages from internet using terminal. But the problem with this was slower download of the packages. We needed some faster download command so that the downloading and installation of the package will be finished soon and start with the package access.

Yes, "apt-fast" is the command which will double your download speeds in Ubuntu. apt-fast isn’t an application, just a shell script that uses the Axel download accelerator to download different pieces of a package simultaneously, lowering the total time it takes to download a package. To set it up, download the shell script, put it in your home folder, and run the following commands.

Download shell script from here.

sudo apt-get install axel
sudo mv apt-fast.sh /usr/bin/apt-fast
sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/apt-fast

From now on, use sudo apt-fast install packagename, where packagename is the app you want to download.

Now choose right server for super-fast downloads. To do this, carry out following steps.

Go to System > Administration > Software Sources and look for the “Download from” dropdown menu. Hit “Other” in that menu and you will see a long list of servers available. If you click the Select Best Server button, Ubuntu will find the fastest one for you.

Facebook: Tag friends in Comments too

All these days, you were allowed to tag people in photos but from now on, you can tag your friends in comments also. Isn't this a good news??

But there is one drawback also. Facebook prevents you from tagging more than 6 people in comment box.

If you want to ta your friends in comment, then you can do as follows.

Type "@"[without double quotes] symbol

Followed by a name which you want to tag and press enter.

Cancel Sent Friend Request in Facebook

Facebook is a social networking site which is in top position currently and almost everyone has an account in Facebook.

The problem which we suffered till date is cancellation of Friend Request. You might come across a Facebook profile who you think is your friend and send a friend request.But later you may realise that the person is not the one you are looking for. At this time, you may find difficult to cancel friend request. But now Facebook has come up with Cancel sent Friend Request.

Steps:-

Log into Facebook.

Go the the profile for whom you sent friend request and want to cancel the Friend request.

Now click on "Cancel friend Request".

Angry birds coming to FACEBOOK shortly

Angry birds is the most popular game and we all know that this game was downloaded for 75 million times. Currently, we can play angry birds in Apple mobiles, Android mobiles, Online and computer. But we never played this game in FACEBOOK. But as per current news, Angry birds is coming for FACEBOOK too. Isn't this a good news fr all gaming lovers????

All games and applications in FACEBOOK will have some social aspect, so Facebook version of Angry Birds will also have a new aspect that cannot be seen in current platforms of the game.

Main competitors to Angry Birds in Facebook will be the Zynga games like Farmsville, Cityville, Poker and etc...

Solution for Angry Birds "Texture is too large:2048×2048, maximum supported size: 1024×1024" error in Windows

Almost everyone knows about Angry birds game but the problem many of us faced is "Texture is too large: 2048×2048, maximum supported size: 1024×1024".

Here is the solution to get rid of this problem.

First check with this solution.

Navigate to the Angry Birds installation path.

Locate the config.lua file. Open it with a text editor such as notepad.

Lower the display resolution by changing values next to Width and Height. lower it down to Width = 1024 and Height = 600 (a known, supported resolution for AB).

Save and close the file. Run the game to see if the error message issue is fixed.

If error is not fixed by above method, Carry out following steps If you do not have your computer hardware's Video driver.

First right click on My Computer and click on Manage.

Now click on Device manager.

Click on Display adapters.

Here you can see your graphics driver. Right click on that and select Update Driver Software.

Select Search online for software.

After the installation of driver is successful, you will be able to play Angry birds.

Carry out following steps If you have your computer hardware's Video driver.

Insert your graphics driver CD/DVD and install Graphics driver.

Now you will be able to play Angry birds.

Speed Up Shutdown Time in Windows 7

Windows 7 is a very popular operating system which we all know but we love anything only when it is fast. Windows 7's one special feature is that it will save all unsaved works before it shutdown's. So the time needed for shutdown will be more. Default time to save your works is 12seconds.

So how can we speed up shutdown time??

First open run from start menu or press Win+R.

Now type regedit and press enter.

Browse for “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control”

In the Right Panel, you will see a file named “WaitToKillServiceTimeout”.

Now Double click and change the value to 2000 (2 sec.).

Click Ok.

From now, your Windows 7 will shutdown much faster than before.

Google Bug erased 150,000 Gmail accounts

Many users got fright by looking to their gmail account because of blank inbox and a ‘Welcome to Gmail’ message awaiting them when they logged in. Google estimated that approximately 500,000 Gmail accounts were reset and many users losing their entire cache of mails, chats, and attachments.

Google started to work immediately and promised users to restore all mail accounts very soon. If your gmail account is reset then you can ask for restoration from Gmail Help Forum.

Solution for "Sitemap Submit Error" in Google Webmaster

We always tend to get error when we do something initially and when we come to know that the solution for the problem is very simple, then we feel sad about ourselves because at initial stage, we were not able to find out the solution. This is obvious with everyone.

Here we have the solution for "Sitemap Submit error" in Google Webmaster.

Most common problem which you can find in Google webmaster while trying to submit sitemap of your website is "Paths don't match We've detected that you submitted your Sitemap using a URL path that doesn't include the www prefix (for instance, http://example.com/sitemap.xml). However, the URLs listed inside your Sitemap do use the www prefix (for instance, http://www.example.com/myfile.htm."

This problem is because you might have submitted wrong sitemap format or because of non www content. So to get your sitemap verified and submitted, carry out the following steps.

Go to dashboard of your website and then to to general settings. Here change the Site URL to look as http://www.example.com.

Note : www is very very essential.

Now, go to http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/

Then enter your website URL for which you want to create sitemap.

Now select frequency, Last modification and Priority.

Now click on start.

Download sitemap.xml file and upload it to your website hosted htdocs folder.

Now go to Google webmaster and submit. It will automatically gets submitted.

Orkut to get a make over again

With the advent of Facebook, Orkut seems to be a haunted place now. Atleast my account does. But Google Team behind orkut has not given up and is going to fight with facebook for its market share. Facebook in the past few years has outdone lot of Social Networking including the giant Orkut which once used to be people's favorite.

Google has recently announced the new look and feel on their Orkut Blog and promises some new features that will be activated to everyone in a while without requiring an invitation.

The new look and feel of Orkut seems to me to be inspired by Facebook. The snapshots released in Orkut's web album shows that the Orkut hasn't got rid of the advertisement at the right pane. And the photo album viewer seems perfect now (facebook photo viewer sucks!).

Google has failed before in attempting for a new look and feel to Orkut and hence the big question - Is this thing going to work out well for Orkut or just another desperate try?
